In what was called "a sick prank" by FleetCenter security officials, the National Basketball Association had its first brush with terrorism at the Los Angeles Clippers vs. Boston Celtics game Friday night.

Apparently mace or pepper spray was released behind the Celtics bench at the end of the third quarter, sickening players and fans sitting in the bench area. Boston players suddenly left the bench, covering their faces with towels. The game was delayed for about 10 minutes, and Boston head coach Jim O'Brien lobbied for the game to be suspended entirely.

NBA vice president Stu Jackson told The Associated Press that the league assigns a security representative to each city as a liason to local law enforcement to assess security threats and the safety of everyone in the arena. After security officers and a Boston police officer determined the fumes would not cause a danger, the game continued.
