The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is developing a mandatory identification card for every transit worker with access to secure areas. The card will be issued to every trucker, dock worker, airport employee and mass transit employee with such access.

The cards would use a form of biometric identification - likely some combination of fingerprints, iris, voice or palm identification.

The idea has been met with approval from many areas, The Associated Press reports. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), which has opposed a national ID system in the past, will support transit identification. A spokesman for a major trucking association also supported the idea.

The proposal comes on the heels of a major ID fraud incident at southern California airports. Federal agents arrested 81 people for using false identification in order to obtain jobs with high levels of security clearance at several airports.
