U.S. Representative Jim Matheson (D-Utah) has hailed federal, state and local agencies as successful in protecting the Salt Lake City Olympics, which held closing ceremonies to complete the two-week exhibition on Sunday.

"Military personnel outnumbered athletes four to one," Matheson said in a weekly radio address. "The Utah Olympic Public Safety Command...created a model for how to coordinate the efforts of 60 federal, state and local agencies to keep us safe.

Matheson added that never in the history of sports has there been such an emphasis on public safety. Apart from a few minor scares, the Olympics were completed without incidents of terrorism.

"Determination prevailed," he said. "We braved the lines at metal detectors, held out bags to be searched, arrived early and waited in the cold. We were not about to let the terrorists win."
