U.S. Department of Transportation secretary Norman Y. Mineta has announced $23 million in federal grants have been awarded to airports in Oregon. Portland International Airport received $1.2 million exclusively earmarked for security upgrades.

"Protecting the transportation infrastructure and improving our ability to quickly respond to future attacks is of central importance," Mineta said.

The grant to Portland International is part of $175 million in funds provided to airports across the nation to help ease costs associated with additional law enforcement personnel, airport surveillance and revalidation of all identification documents.
