The new fee is $2.50 per person, per flight. Every time a passenger changes planes, the fee will be applied. The money should help the department of Transportation meet its goal of screening 100 percent of checked baggage for explosives and other contraband.
The airline industry, however, is trying to delay the January deadline for inspecting all checked baggage. Some executives have asked Congress for a 30-day extension. Under the new law, airlines have until Jan. 18 to inspect all baggage using a combination of explosives detection machines, x-ray machines, hand-searches and bomb-sniffing dogs.
