Several community colleges in the Philadelphia area and Drexel University have developed a series of 58 Homeland Security training courses that began in November.

The courses are part of a new Associate degree in Emergency Management and Planning developed for the community colleges and a Bachelor of Science degree being developed by Drexel University.

The Department of Labor and Industry provided funding to develop and deliver a competency-based training and education program for professionals in public and private entities responsible for security and public safety. In developing the program, college and university staff conducted a needs assessment and interviews with representatives of local public and private organizations regarding their training requirements in the area of emergency planning, management and response.
