Almost three-quarters of Americans approve of President Bush's proposal to create a new Cabinet-level Department of Homeland Security, although most are not convinced that it will be effective in protecting the United States from future acts of terrorism, according to a recent Gallup poll.

The latest CNN/USA Today/Gallup poll was conducted after Bush's speech to the nation on June 6.

Poll respondents were read the following question: "As you may know, shortly after the September 11th terrorist attacks, President Bush created the office of Homeland Security. Now, Bush is proposing that this office be combined with many existing government agencies to create a new Cabinet-level department. Do you approve or disapprove of the creation of a new Cabinet Department of Homeland Security?"

Seventy-two percent approved, while 20 percent disapproved. Within the responses, 84 percent of Republicans approve of the new Department, while 59 percent of Democrats approve.
