The Wall Street Journal has reported that Washington D.C. police are building the nation's largest network of surveillance cameras to monitor shopping areas, streets, monuments and other public places.
The new cameras will be linked with existing systems in the city's transit stations, schools and traffic intersections. According to the report, D.C. officials were intrigued by the British surveillance system, which uses more than 2 million cameras networked throughout the country.
By design, the surveillance system would be viewable on computers already installed in many of the city's squad cars.
