Security exec calls for greater employee involvement in security
Nov 3, 2003 12:00 PM
To ensure business continuity in the face of a growing volume and range of threats, Ron Moritz, senior vice president and chief security strategist for Computer Associates, advocates a progressive security posture that involves all employees and educates them about best practices in security.
"Security ultimately depends on each individual asking the right questions at the right time -- like 'Why is that door open?' or 'Does that cell phone have a built-in camera?'," Moritz said during a panel discussion on the intersection of physical and cyber security, corporate risk, and privacy at the United States Military Academy at West Point, N.Y. "Companies must engage the eyes and ears of their employees to protect their company and their country. In other words, security is everyone's business."
In addition to ramping up employee awareness, Moritz expressed the importance of educating and involving other constituencies in security activities, including customers, partners and contractors.
Moritz encouraged security managers to embrace enterprise-wide, function-agnostic risk management strategies, and emphasized the role such strategies can play in enhancing business performance and profitability.
