A painting was stolen from the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum in New Mexico last week, but it was quickly recovered, and a security guard who reported the theft has emerged as a suspect, police said.
The guard called police at 2 a.m., to report a burglary, and about $14,000 and a painting valued at $500,000 were found to be missing, police said. As the investigation unfolded, the painting and the money were recovered, and signs began pointing to the guard as the suspected thief.
Security guard William D. Crumpton, 44, was charged with embezzlement and criminal damage to property.
The theft took place at the privately owned museum in downtown Santa Fe. About $1,000 in damage was done to electronic equipment and the gallery.
Last month, a painting by O'Keeffe was stolen from the nearby state-owned Museum of Fine Arts. That painting has not been recovered.
