Transportation Department Inspector General Kenneth Mead has said that airports need to do a better job in keeping unauthorized individuals out of secure airport areas.
All transportation employees -- at airports, seaports, rail yards and other areas -- would undergo the background check and then receive their ID card.
David Stempler, president of the Air Passengers Association, told The Associated Press that the employee ID card could be the precursor to a frequent flyer ID card to allow airline passengers who voluntarily undergo background checks to bypass long security lines.
