An FBI warning that terrorist may be targeting passenger trains has Amtrak and other rail carriers scrambling to upgrade security measures.

Department of Transportation officials have promised to increase patrols of the tracks, stations and trains. Amtrak announced it is focusing its police force primarily on the 457-miles network from Washington D.C., to Boston.

Edward R. Hamberger, president of the Association of American Railroads, told The Associated Press that railroads have recently developed a security plan that includes an operations center linking railroad control centers with law enforcement and surveillance.

The FBI warning came from information obtained from imprisoned al-Qaida members.
