A computer worm that took advantage of a vulnerability in Microsoft software crippled thousands of computers around the world this weekend. While the problem was solved, the response pointed to a major security flaw among system administrators -- that they are not keeping their defensive systems up-to-date.

Microsoft had already released a patch designed to eliminate the security vulnerability in its SQL Server 2000 software (used mainly by the government and businesses), but many administrators had not yet installed it when the attack occurred Saturday.
