Fire Safety Program Introduced At Ohio College Campuses
Oct 14, 2008 2:20 PM
As the nation turns its attention to fire safety during National Fire Prevention Week, a program to raise the awareness of campus fire safety among students is taking place in Ohio.
The Pi Beta Phi Fraternity for Women, in partnership with the People's Burn Foundation of Indiana and Campus Firewatch of Massachusetts, has launched a campaign to sell fire-safe flameless candles and distribute fire safety literature at the seven campuses in Ohio with Pi Phi chapters. This program, known as "Remembering Julie," is being done in the memory of Julie Turnbull, a member of Pi Beta Phi, who died in 2005 in an off-campus fire at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.
"We're doing it because our vision is to contribute to the betterment of society," says Emily Nicholson, with Pi Phi's national headquarters. "A lot of people die each year for reasons that are preventable and fire is one of these reasons."
Each woman is being asked to sell two candles, distribute fire safety literature developed for this program by PBF, Campus Firewatch and Pi Phi and to promote the use of the fire safety education program "To Hell and Back: College Fire Survival" funded by the Department of Homeland Security and its testing site www.igot2kno.org. All of the net proceeds from the sales will go to support the People's Burn Foundation campus fire safety efforts.
Since January 2000, almost 130 people have died in campus-related fires according to information compiled by Campus Firewatch with more than 80 percent of the deaths occurring in off-campus housing.
