U.S. Navy Deploys Outdoor Perimeter Intrusion Detection System At Southeastern Facility

The U.S. Department of Defense and the U.S. Navy have selected a fiber-optic and laser-based perimeter detection system from Future Fibre Technologies (FFT), Mountain View, Calif., to protect an unnamed facility in the Southeastern U.S.

FFT's Secure Fence Locator fiber-optic outdoor perimeter intrusion detection system will allow the facility to locate intruders in software-defined zones as short as 75-ft. to provide an accurate threat assessment.

The system was supplied through integrator Systems Application and Solutions (SAS) LLC. According to Carey Jones of SAS, the facility, located in an environment with increased lightning activity, chose the Secure Fence Locator system in part because electronic hardware was not needed outdoors.

“While several overseas military organizations are routine users and the U.S. Army has operational systems deployed both here and in Iraq, we are quite pleased to now count the U.S. Navy among our clients,” says Bill Evenson, FFT vice president for the Americas.

USAF University and Air War College Employ Notification System For Emergencies

The U.S. Air Force Air University and Air War College at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, Ala., have deployed IWSAlerts from Burlingame, Calif.-based AtHoc Inc., for emergency alerting on campus. The university and college are part of the Air Force's Air Education and Training Command. Air University provides Air Force education, from pre-commissioning to the highest levels of professional military education, including granting degrees and professional continuing education for officers, enlisted and civilian personnel throughout their careers. The Air War College is the senior professional school of the U.S. Air Force and is open to lieutenant colonels and colonels or equivalent in Navy rank or civil service grade.

The university and college are responsible for protecting faculty and students. IWSAlerts enables the institutions to quickly alert staff and students if there is an emergency that impacts the entire facility or a smaller group within the campus. Notification takes place via the network to desktops and laptops with a pop-up alert and an accompanying audio alarm. The system can also send text messages to handheld devices with information about emergencies, including accidents, weather warnings, violence or attacks, hazardous conditions, fire warnings and contaminations.

“In the past couple of months, there has been an increased emphasis on campus security for obvious reasons,” says Guy Miasnik, president and CEO of AtHoc. “The DoD has been actively pioneering the use of AtHoc's system to transform network-connected devices into effective alerting platforms. All campuses and facilities can learn from the best practices derived from the Defense Department's experiences.”
