Long Beach High School in Lido Beach, N.Y., has completed phase one of a district-wide initiative to implement a scalable security management platform that will serve as a building block with the capability to tie in access control, building management systems, IP Intercoms and text-messaging alerts. As the first phase, IPVideo Corp., Bay Shore, N.Y., has installed an integrated, full-featured video surveillance system.

The ambitious project was undertaken in order to assist in the district's initiative to establish itself as a safe harbor for learning. By leveraging the school's existing network infrastructure, installing IPVideo's Enterprise Class Surveillance System and 36 Axis network cameras, the school saved thousands of dollars while benefiting from the IP network video's scalability, Power-Over-Ethernet (PoE) capabilities and remote management. Cooperation in the logistical planning between IPVideo Corp.'s engineers and the Long Beach Schools IT department allowed for seamless integration that concluded in only 30 days.

“The district needed a system that could clearly identify individuals,” says David Antar, president of IPVideo Corp. “The district had a high-tech infrastructure in place and wanted the best surveillance to go along with it. They have a tremendous ability to support high-resolution cameras because the WAN infrastructure provides more bandwidth. Analog cameras cannot support the higher resolutions that network cameras connected to a network video recorder (NVR) can. There is a limit to where analog systems can go and what they can do.”

“High school can be a very tough time for teenagers,” says Michel Richez, the district's director of technology and information services. “Situations may start in the neighborhood and migrate on school campuses. There are hundreds of kids who are experiencing a lot of physical changes and who are emotionally charged. Things are bound to happen. It is not just this high school; it is in every high school. For us, it was time to put an effective and scalable security plan in place as a precautionary measure.”
