The cost to retailers of shoplifting and employee theft continues to rise. The following are excerpts from an annual survey of 30 large retail companies representing 12,833 stores with combined 2001 sales in excess of $419 billion.

Total dollar recoveries from both shoplifters and dishonest employees in 2001, an increase of 9.44% over 2000.

The number of apprehended shoplifters in 2001, a 5.19% increase from 2000.

On a per-company basis, the number of employees apprehended for theft by their employer. (Based on more than 2.2 million employees).

The amount recovered for every $27.95 lost to retail theft.
