One Chip Fits All

A new wave of video cameras provides highly definitive images in which each pixel is tweaked to its optimal exposure in order to clearly capture both dark and light areas within the frame. They are based on the D2500 Video Imaging System chipsets for high-performance security cameras introduced by Pixim Inc., Mountain View, Calif., in September 2005. The Orca family of chipsets uses Pixim's Digital Pixel System (DPS) technology, which employs an analog-to-digital converter found within each pixel of the image sensor to convert light signals into digital signals at their point of capture. Each image pixel then goes through a series of digital signal processing (DSP) techniques that determine its optimized exposure time.

Since its introduction, the Orca chipset — which includes the digital image sensor, a digital image processor and imaging software — has been integrated into a number of video cameras available on the market. From boxes and domes to bullet and specialized application cameras, analog or IP, there are now more than 100 models that include the Pixim DPS. Shown above are just a few of them that use the Orca 2500 model chipset.

   FEATURES: Available in ultra WDR, high dynamic range and general purpose • DR2 is impact-resistant and weatherproof • DM2 is a plastic-housed indoor model • Three-axis gimble allows the cameras to rotate 360 degrees and tilt 90 degrees APPLICATION FEATURES: Domes blend easily into any environment

4. Honeywell HCU484 High Resolution Ultra Wide Dynamic Camera

   FEATURES: Greater than 480 TV lines of resolution • Typical dynamic range of 102 dB; maximum of 120 dB • 50/60 fps progressive video capture • RS485 remote control capability APPLICATION FEATURES: Includes seven presets for simple setup in applications such as ATM machines, loading docks and gated entrances

5. Lumenera Li045 Intelligent Camera

   FEATURES: Selectable MJPEG and H.264 compression • Streams 720×480 resolution at up to 30 fps • Employs Ti DaVinci DSP technology and ObjectVideo analytics • Available in color or monochrome APPLICATION FEATURES: A variety of environmental enclosures are available for outdoor applications

6. Pelco IP110 CamclosureMini-Domes

   FEATURES: Power-over-Ethernet • Three simultaneous video streams • Dual MPEG-4 and scalable MJPEG • Available camera and lens options for low-light sensitivity, extreme lighting and ultra high-resolution APPLICATION FEATURES: When integrated with a network switch device, users can view video through any Internet Explorer or Firefox Web browser, locally or remotely
