Hearst Castle, the former estate of publishing magnate and art collector William Randolph Hearst in San Simeon, Calif., presents unique challenges in protecting its structures, grounds, furnishings, art, visitors and employees.

Owned by the State of California and operated by California State Parks, Hearst Castle is operated as a historic house museum. It is open to the public, and as many as 800,000 visitors participate in the guided tour program each year.

The security challenge lies in protecting the art and architecture while still providing accessibility to the historic structures and objects. “We depend on the latest security technology,” says Jack Raymond, security specialist at Hearst Castle.

Pacom Systems, Sarasota, Fla., and its local California certified product reseller Hamilton Pacific designed and implemented an integrated security system for the complex project.

The system includes monitoring capabilities covering 127 hilltop acres. The system integrates access control, intrusion detection, digital video transmission and storage, elevator control, building management and remote alarm monitoring from a single control panel.

“Hearst Castle is a very good example of how a fully integrated security solution can easily operate with existing security products to create new efficiencies and cost savings,” says Andrew Minnikin, president of Pacom Systems North America.
