HEAVY SURVEILLANCE ON THE LIGHT RAILS
Jul 1, 2005 12:00 PM
The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) in California has decided to install video surveillance systems on 80 light rail vehicles after the previous success of the VTA's bus surveillance program.
“Our decision to equip our light rail vehicles with video surveillance systems stemmed from the large success of the On-board Surveillance Program on the VTA buses since 2001,” says Robert Gave, project manager for the VTA.
The authority chose Mobile Digital Video Recorders (MDVRs) from the Viscom Products Division of Diversified Security Solutions, New York. The surveillance systems also includes Enterprise Management Suite software from March Networks, Ottawa.
VTA will use an 802.11g network for communications from the on-board MDVRs to a central monitoring station. The system will provide the authority with video download capabilities as well as a proactive fleet management system. Viscom will also provide maintenance to the systems over the next three years.
The surveillance cameras will be installed in the VTA's new low-floor Kinkisharyo light rail vehicles.
“The Viscom system had excellent image quality, and demonstrated better wireless diagnostic and video download capabilities than other systems (we) demonstrated,” Gave says.
During the testing phase of the system on VTA buses in 2002, more than 200 arrests were made for vandalism alone.
