Innovation Corner: Big Brother's Third Eye

Leveraging medical and biometric research, a wristband device from Third Eye Inc, Elkhart, Ind., uses a person's vital signs to activate video surveillance and prevent crime.
The Security Alert Tracking System (SATS) is a wrist-mounted surveillance tracking device that monitors an individual's key vital signs, including heart rate and oxygen saturation levels, through an embedded bio-sensor chip developed by SPO Medical, Woodland Hills, Calif. According to Third Eye Inc., a person's vital signs tend to fluctuate unnaturally during stressful situations, such as when an employee is subjected to threatening behavior or when he or she engages in an illegal activity. When vital sign fluctuations occur within a person wearing the device, the information is captured on the wrist unit and transmitted wirelessly to a central monitoring system. The receiving system analyzes the information and alerts authorities in a pre-determined format. The receiver can be integrated with a video surveillance system to trigger cameras to zoom in on the employee and determine the source of his or her stress.
The device could be used in casinos, banks, offices and retail stores to increase employee security, protect from theft and assist in apprehending employees who engage in unlawful activities. “Increasingly, companies are looking for unobtrusive ways to monitor employee safety and security,” says David Sims, Jr., president of Third Eye Inc. “Together with SPO, we will demonstrate SATS' ease-of-use and technical capabilities in two key markets: the gaming industry and the banking industry.” Visit thirdeyesurveillance.com.
