Nobody wants to sit all day and look at a video screen (except maybe during football season), and studies have shown that attention spans drift away when one looks at a screen for any period of time waiting for something to move. Fortunately, today's “smarter” video systems will watch the screen for you and then let you know when something happens that requires human attention or intervention. It's a product category that is burgeoning, as these examples demonstrate.

Video Intelligence System

FOR LARGE-SCALE VIDEO SURVEILLANCE NETWORKS

The Vi System from Agent Vi is a video intelligence system based on the supplier's Image Processing over IP (IPoP) technology. The system platform is comprised of three main components. The Vi-Agent is a software module that conducts “universal feature extraction,” which processes raw images before compression takes place. The Vi-Server receives and processes data from a variety of Vi-Agent-embedded devices connected to the network and stores it in a central database. The Vi-Sentry is a Command-and-Control application that enables users to monitor and handle events, set event detection criteria and control various parameters. Using Vi-Sentry, a single operator can handle, review and analyze automatically detected suspicious activity from cameras in the field. Event detection capabilities include video motion, non-motion, behavior, smoke, fire, graffiti and vandalism detection. A scalable system design allows end-users to add as many cameras as necessary without purchasing additional components. Video Analytics System

FOR REAL-TIME SECURITY ANALYSIS

Perceptrak 4.0 from Cernium Corp. is powered by the company's Perception-Based Analytics technology, which mimics the human vision process to analyze video eight to 10 times more efficiently than other systems. Faster analysis translates into direct operational savings, according to company representatives. Features include an “Edge of the Network” Video Management tool and an IP Camera Configuration tool as well as Intelligent Zone Selection, a scheduler and system activity logs. Security risk reduction features include a CheckVideo Security Camera Management tool, which provides 24/7 assurances that cameras are online and functioning, and Failover Recovery and Local Caching to ensure continuous uptime even after a loss of communications. The system can be installed with as few as 16 cameras and is expandable to suit larger needs. Perceptrak 4.0, Cernium Corp. (cernium.com) Circle No. 28 or visit securitysolutions.com/productinfo.

Video Analytics Modules

AUTOMATES MONITORING AND DETECTING

The range of video analytics products from ioimage includes intelligent video detection modules for intrusion detection, object removal detection, autonomous PTZ tracking, stopped vehicle and unattended baggage detection capabilities. Intrusion detection capabilities function in a movement behavior mode, which sounds an alarm when a person or vehicle moves within a prohibited area, and a tripwire mode, which sounds an alarm when a person or vehicle breaches a demarcation line of separation. Object removal detection sounds an alarm when an item is removed from its last location. Stopped vehicle detection sounds an alarm when a vehicle stops in a controlled area. Unattended baggage detection functions by sounding an alarm when an item is left in a controlled area. PTZ camera tracking provides self-directed vision-guided tracking to target a moving object. All products can detect intruders in 3D-scape under low visibility conditions and support pre-alarm recording to capture moments before an alarm sounds. ioi Video Analytics, ioimage, (ioimage.com) Circle No. 29 or visit securitysolutions.com/productinfo.

Video Analysis Software

DETECTS SUSPICIOUS EVENTS ON ANY SURVEILLANCE SYSTEM

IQ-Infinity from iOmniscient integrates patented Non-Motion Detection technology with a Video Motion Detection engine. Software capabilities include abandoned object, theft, graffiti and vandalism detection in a crowd, crowd management, perimeter and intruder and illegal parking detection, individual counting, and behavior analysis and tracking. The system also features an Alarm Minimization System (NAMS) to cope with environmental factors and lighting. Users can see perspective with a single camera and gain access to the software on wireless devices. The system includes an Anti-Sabotage and Camera Incompetence warning, a forensic capability and object differentiation technology. Versions are available in a variety of languages. Network Client Intelligent Video Analytics (NCIVA)

SIMPLIFIES VIDEO MANAGEMENT

The NCIVA from Tyco Fire and Security/American Dynamics allows users to manage all digital video management systems and cameras from one interface. The system detects, identifies and tracks activities that violate video system rules and notifies security personnel in real-time. Users can determine, for example, if an object crosses a video tripwire, enters an area of interest or simply appears in the camera view. NCIVA features ObjectVideo OnBoard, an embedded intelligent video analytics technology that positions and provides descriptions of all moving and stationary objects. The video analytic system is suitable for railway and airport applications as well as school perimeter, port, border and retail security. Intelligent Video Surveillance System

DEFINES, PRIORITIZES AND TRACKS THREATS

GuardianWATCH from Guardian Solutions controls all analog and digital cameras plus non-video sensors to define, prioritize detect and track threats. Responders receive notification from an audio or video alarm or a full situation display that combines real-time video and a map of the threat and its location. Other features include a smart video software system that can be embedded within programmable video encoders and recorders, a smart video encoder to execute video analytics, and a smart video coprocessor, which functions as a DVR or NDVR platform. An intrusion detection system manages all cameras and generates real-time situation display and data recording. The system operates over a secure Linux platform and is scaleable to suit the end-user's needs. GuardianWATCH, Guardian Solutions (guardiansolutions.com) Circle No. 32 or visit securitysolutions.com
